Late Night host Seth Meyers has called out Republicans who continue to stoke division in the aftermath of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. Meyers made a passionate plea on his show, urging them to put an end to their divisive tactics.
Addressing the need for a non-violent exchange of ideas and the peaceful resolution of disputes, Meyers emphasized the importance of an inclusive politics based on compassion, empathy, and community. He criticized the opportunistic purveyors of paranoia, suspicion, and fear who have been filling the void with incendiary conspiracy theories and lies.
Meyers specifically mentioned Georgia GOP Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Mike Collins, along with Trump's newly announced running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), for falsely pointing fingers and trying to blame President Joe Biden for the assassination attempt. He expressed his disappointment, remarking that at a time when things are already bad, these Republicans are choosing to make things worse.
"You are choosing to inflame the national mood at a dangerous moment rather than show the leadership and basic decency it would take to calm things down. You should be ashamed. Please stop," Meyers demanded.
Meyers further refuted the notion that engaging in the work of democracy and peaceful persuasion incites violence. He emphasized that accurately describing the dangers of autocracy and warning against attempts to dismantle democracy are not only our democratic right but also our civic duty.
In his monologue, Meyers highlighted the importance of continuing to speak plainly about the specter of authoritarianism and to work towards the preservation of democracy. He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to promoting a peaceful exchange of ideas and encouraging others to join in that endeavor.
As the aftermath of the assassination attempt continues to stir political tensions, Seth Meyers' passionate plea calls for unity and leadership among Republicans. It remains to be seen how his words will resonate within the GOP and whether they will choose to align themselves with a politics of compassion, empathy, and community, or continue down a path of divisiveness and fear.
