The New York Knicks find themselves facing a challenging decision as they aim to retain Isaiah Hartenstein in free agency. According to Yahoo sources, the team has engaged in discussions with other teams about potentially moving Mitchell Robinson to make room for Hartenstein.
Hartenstein, a skilled offensive player, is considered likely to return to the Knicks despite the possibility of a bidding war for his services. The Knicks had previously formed a formidable offensive-defensive combination at the center position, with Robinson providing strong defensive prowess and Hartenstein adding an offensive spark. However, the team now faces a dilemma of whether it makes sense to retain both players.
Robinson, who recently signed a four-year, $60 million extension in 2022, has two years remaining on his contract, amounting to roughly $27.3 million. Whilst being recognized for his top-notch defending abilities, Robinson has struggled with injuries, playing in just 90 games since signing his extension. Moreover, a stress fracture in his left ankle requiring surgery limited him to appearing in only six out of 13 postseason games this year.
Meanwhile, Hartenstein flourished during Robinson's extended absence. He showcased his skills by averaging 7.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game this season, and demonstrated durability by appearing in 157 out of 164 regular-season games over the past two years.
The Knicks face financial constraints due to being over the salary cap, limiting their ability to offer Hartenstein a lucrative contract. Their potential offer to retain him would have an average annual value of around $17 million, with a maximum offer of four years and $72.5 million.
While the Oklahoma City Thunder are considered strong contenders to secure Hartenstein's services, as they led the Western Conference in wins this past season, sources indicate that the team is more likely to pursue a "situational reserve big man" rather than commit to a substantial contract. This could potentially work in favor of the Knicks in their bid to retain Hartenstein.
Other notable free-agent big men in the market include Nic Claxton of the Brooklyn Nets and Jonas Valanciunas of the New Orleans Pelicans. Should the Knicks decide to move ahead with parting ways with Mitchell, they could join numerous teams looking to trade for a big man.
Yahoo sources have identified several potential trade targets for teams in need of size, including Brook Lopez of the Milwaukee Bucks, Clint Capela of the Atlanta Hawks, Walker Kessler of the Utah Jazz, and Isaiah Stewart of the Detroit Pistons.
As the offseason progresses, the Knicks find themselves at a crucial juncture, carefully weighing their options to solidify their frontcourt while attempting to retain an offensive talent in Hartenstein. The next steps taken by the team will undoubtedly have implications not only for their own roster but also for the unfolding NBA trade landscape.
