The New York Knicks initiated a bold move to enhance their offensive lineup by acquiring Karl-Anthony Towns, intending to offset the defensive gap left by Isaiah Hartenstein’s departure to the Oklahoma City Thunder. However, as the season progressed, it became evident that Towns’ defensive shortcomings were a growing concern.

Karl-Anthony Towns has struggled defensively throughout the season, and this was especially glaring during the playoffs. When paired with Jalen Brunson, the Knicks found themselves unable to secure defensive stops. Brunson's size inherently limits his defensive capabilities, whereas Towns, despite having the physical attributes and athleticism of a center, has never excelled in defense.

A postmortem by The Athletic’s Fred Katz and James Edwards revealed the internal frustrations brewing within the Knicks organization. While players publicly hinted at poor communication affecting their performance, behind the scenes, the discontent with Towns' defensive habits was palpable. The coaching staff and players were less troubled by his talent level and more by his inconsistent defensive processes, particularly his failure to communicate his actions during plays.

Veteran player PJ Tucker, signed late in the season, highlighted the root of the issue. “They all talk to me,” Tucker remarked after Game 1 of the Knicks’ second-round series against Boston. “But they didn’t talk to each other in real-time, in those situations.” This lack of real-time communication is detrimental in modern NBA defense, where spacing and offensive creativity can dismantle an uncoordinated defense.

Statistically, the Knicks’ defense improved by 2.8 points per 100 possessions when Towns was on the bench during the regular season. Although this gap narrowed in the playoffs, the defensive units with both Towns and Brunson struggled markedly. The Indiana Pacers exploited Towns' vulnerabilities, scoring easily over him in drop coverage and outplaying him in one-on-one situations.

Looking forward, the Knicks face a critical decision regarding Towns. While Brunson remains untouchable as the franchise player, the onus falls on Towns to elevate his defensive game. His previous success as part of a top-ranked defense with the Minnesota Timberwolves might suggest a positional adjustment, possibly shifting him back to power forward to improve the Knicks' defensive coherence.

However, the persistent nature of Towns’ defensive lapses might prompt the Knicks to consider exploring trade options. With Mitchell Robinson healthy again, the team has a dependable defensive-minded center. Should the Knicks decide that Towns’ defensive flaws are irreparable, they may look to trade him away in hopes of bolstering their defense with a more reliable option.

Ultimately, Towns' future with the Knicks hinges on whether he can overcome his defensive deficiencies. After a decade in the league, the time for him to prove his defensive worth is now, or the Knicks might seek other avenues to solidify their defense.
