Chepngetich clocked in at an impressive 2:09:56, cutting almost two minutes from the previous record and making history as the first woman to complete the marathon distance in under 2 hours and 10 minutes.
The 30-year-old runner finished 10th overall, with only nine male competitors ahead of her. This achievement marked a significant improvement over her performance in the 2022 Chicago Marathon, where she missed the women's world record by just 14 seconds.
"I feel so great," Chepngetich shared after the race. "I'm very proud of myself. This is my dream. I fought a lot, thinking about the world record. The world record has come back to Kenya."
Chepngetich dedicated her remarkable accomplishment to Kelvin Kiptum, a fellow Kenyan marathon runner who tragically passed away in a car crash earlier this year at the age of 24. Kiptum had also made waves in the marathon world, setting a record of 2:00:35 in Chicago the previous year.
Adding to Kenya's triumph, John Korir, another Kenyan runner, won the men's race, clocking in at 2:02:43. This time ranks as the second-fastest ever in Chicago, right behind Kiptum's record-setting performance.
Chepngetich’s outstanding achievement has once again placed Kenya in the global spotlight for long-distance running, solidifying the nation's legacy in the sport.
