Former Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford's wife, Kelly Stafford, has revealed that she will not be attending her husband's season opener with the Los Angeles Rams in person. Instead, she plans to watch the game from home with their four daughters. The decision comes after Kelly and her children were subjected to booing during a wild-card loss at Ford Field earlier this year.
In a recent episode of her podcast, "The Morning After," Kelly shared her plans to travel back to Detroit for a live show on September 7th but will return home before the game. Commenting on her decision, she said, "Physically, I am not [attending the game in Detroit]. After our amazing live show, I'm going to hop on a plane and head home so I can watch it with my daughters here, so that's the plan."
Matthew Stafford spent 12 seasons with the Lions before being traded to the Rams earlier this year. The wild-card game against the Lions in January was the first time Kelly had returned to Ford Field since the trade. Reflecting on the experience, she took to social media, stating, "The city wants to win. Everything is fair game... 'Except the fans who booed my children..' Other than that, I loved the atmosphere, and the booing just gave my husband more fire."
The couple, who are parents to seven-year-old twins Sawyer and Chandler, six-year-old Hunter, and four-year-old Tyler, are taking their daughters' wishes into account as well. During the podcast, Kelly mentioned asking her daughters if they wanted to attend the game in Detroit, and they expressed their desire not to go. "So that is another reason we won't be returning for the game," she explained. "There's a lot that goes into it... but I just think it's the better decision for my mental health and for my daughters."
When asked about the reception she received during the previous playoff game in Detroit, Kelly acknowledged that it played a part in her decision. "I think it's a little bit of both," she said. "I have such good memories in that dome, and the last memory I have wasn't that great. But I also just want to continue to have these amazing memories of that place."
Kelly also addressed the criticism she faced and the nickname "cleat chaser" she earned for her previous comments. She clarified that she didn't support using relationships for money or fame but embraced the nickname when it was about genuine intentions.
As the NFL season kicks off, Kelly Stafford's decision to watch the game from home reflects her desire to prioritize her family's well-being and cherish the positive memories. While the passionate Detroit fans will surely be missed, she remains grateful for the experiences she had in the city and looks forward to supporting her husband from the comfort of home.
