In a recent episode of his "New Heights" podcast, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce expressed his disagreement with teammate Harrison Butker's controversial commencement speech at Benedictine College. Kelce made it clear that he does not agree with "just about any" of Butker's views, but values him as a teammate and respects his right to hold different opinions.

Kelce praised Butker for treating his family and friends with kindness and respect, affirming that's how he treats everyone. However, Kelce noted that while he appreciates Butker's love for his own family and children, he does not align with the majority of his views, especially on matters related to religion and lifestyle choices.

Butker made headlines for suggesting that women should stay at home, criticizing LGBTQ+ Pride Month, and taking a stance against President Joe Biden and abortion during his commencement address. The remarks prompted widespread backlash, leading the NFL to distance itself from Butker's comments.

Jonathan Beane, the NFL's senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer, clarified that Butker made these statements in his personal capacity, and they do not reflect the views of the NFL as an organization. Beane emphasized the league's unwavering commitment to inclusivity, which strengthens the NFL community.

Despite the controversy, Butker's jersey sales soared after the graduation, indicating that some individuals may not necessarily agree with his words but still support him. This sentiment was echoed by Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who emphasized his years of knowing Butker and the character he displays daily. Mahomes acknowledged that they may not always share the same beliefs, but he respects Butker's right to express his opinions and believes he is striving to lead people in the right direction.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid, while in constant communication with Butker, did not feel the need to discuss the speech upon the team reconvening in Kansas City. Reid highlighted the diverse backgrounds, religions, and races within the team, emphasizing the importance of respecting each other's opinions and allowing everyone to have a voice.

On the same podcast episode, Travis Kelce's brother, Jason Kelce, added his perspective, acknowledging that there will always be opinions people disagree with. He recognized that Butker's speech at a Catholic university naturally took a religious and Catholic tone. Jason Kelce emphasized the value of listening to different perspectives, such as recognizing the importance of family and the role of a mother, while also acknowledging that individuals have the freedom to choose their own paths in life.

The Chiefs' players' nuanced reactions to the controversial commencement speech highlight the diversity of opinions within the team and their commitment to respecting each other's differences. As the Chiefs continue their offseason preparations, their focus remains on unity and harmony, allowing for open dialogues while maintaining a strong bond as teammates.
