The Kansas City Chiefs, back-to-back defending Super Bowl champions, are leaving no stone unturned as they prepare for the upcoming season. During Saturday's practice, the team focused on several key areas to fine-tune their game.

Firstly, the Chiefs live-streamed portions of the practice, giving fans a glimpse into the team's training camp. This followed a successful broadcast earlier in the summer, and additional Training Camp Live segments are scheduled for July 31 and August 5.

Building on the previous day's momentum, the Chiefs took the field in pads for the second consecutive day. The extended practice allowed the team to gradually increase their workload and engage in contact drills. These padded sessions are vital for refining the running game and enable linemen to participate in 1-on-1 drills.

In a dedicated segment called "9-on-7," the Chiefs focused on improving their ground game. This drill involved nine offensive players and seven defenders, excluding receivers and cornerbacks. Wide receivers Kadarius Toney, Nikko Remigio, and Phillip Brooks impressed during this period, showcasing their skills with impressive catches. Rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy also made a remarkable, albeit out-of-bounds, acrobatic grab down the sideline.

Moreover, veteran tight end Irv Smith shone during the 11-on-11 period, demonstrating excellent catching ability and securing two touchdown passes from quarterback Carson Wentz. Short-yardage scenarios, including near the goal line, were also practiced extensively.

Special teams were not neglected during Saturday's practice. Punter Matt Araiza faced the challenge of punting from the team's own end zone, simulating a "backed up punt" situation. Assistant Head Coach and Special Teams Coordinator Dave Toub revealed that a selection of wide receivers, including Worthy, Toney, Mecole Hardman, Hollywood Brown, and Remigio, are being considered as potential punt returners for the 2024 season. Kicker Harrison Butker will primarily handle kickoffs, with safety Justin Reid and running back Louis Rees-Zammit as potential alternatives depending on the situation.

Unfortunately, wide receiver Justin Watson was absent from practice for the second consecutive day due to a foot injury. However, he was seen catching footballs from the jugs machine after the session, indicating progress in his recovery. Cornerback Nazeeh Johnson also left practice early with a hamstring injury. Safety Justin Reid and defensive end BJ Thompson remain on the "Non-Football Injury/Illness" list, while cornerback Jaylen Watson, defensive end Charles Omenihu, defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi, and offensive guard Joe Thuney continue to be listed as "Physically Unable to Perform" or "PUP."

The Chiefs will have their seventh practice of training camp on Sunday, open to the general public. Fans interested in attending must reserve tickets online in advance. As the team prepares for the upcoming season, their intensive training camp aims to maintain their Super Bowl-winning form.
