In a recent episode of the Pound 4 Pound podcast, Kamaru Usman discussed the possibility of a showdown between him and Conor McGregor for the UFC welterweight title. Usman claimed that he had offered McGregor two opportunities to fight him during his reign as champion, but "The Notorious" declined both times.
Usman's revelation came after being shown a clip of McGregor insulting him during a live Q&A session, where McGregor called Usman "a bum." Usman responded by expressing his disappointment and labeling McGregor's behavior as disrespectful. He urged McGregor to focus on being a good father and role model rather than engaging in unnecessary beef.
During Usman's dominant reign as welterweight champion from 2018 to 2022, McGregor was occupied with preparations for his high-profile boxing match against Floyd Mayweather Jr. Additionally, McGregor faced various personal issues outside of the octagon, including a suspension and allegations of sexual assault.
Despite acknowledging the need for fighters to sell fights through personal attacks, Usman emphasized that unnecessary beef outside of promotions is uncalled for. He highlighted his past experience with Colby Covington, who left no stone unturned while promoting their fight, but ultimately, they settled their differences in the cage.
Usman also addressed McGregor, reminding him to focus on his upcoming fight against Michael Chandler at UFC 303 on June 29. He warned McGregor of the dangers of underestimating Chandler, predicting a knockout win for the renowned lightweight fighter if McGregor is not fully prepared.
The welterweight contender criticized McGregor's habit of diminishing other fighters' accomplishments, deeming it disgraceful. Usman emphasized that if the Conor McGregor of old, with his exceptional skills, resurfaces, it would be a tough night for anyone in his weight division. However, he reiterated that Chandler is a real threat, highlighting his ability to deliver powerful strikes that can leave opponents questioning their surroundings.
As the speculation surrounding a matchup between Usman and McGregor continues, Usman stands firm in his assertion that he had given McGregor multiple opportunities to challenge for the welterweight title. While Usman remains focused on his own career, he hopes McGregor will come to realize the importance of preparation and dedication in the world of martial arts.
With McGregor's highly anticipated return to the cage nearing, fans are eagerly awaiting his clash with Chandler. The outcome of this fight could potentially determine the trajectory of McGregor's career moving forward.
