Vice President Kamala Harris has seen a surge in favorability among independent voters, according to a recent poll published on Sunday. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump's popularity appears to be waning.
The ABC News/Ipsos poll, conducted from July 26 to 27, surveyed 1,200 U.S. adults, including 314 independents. It found that 44 percent of independents hold a favorable view of Harris, while 40 percent have an unfavorable view. This indicates a significant increase in Harris' favorability among independents from the previous week's poll, where she was viewed favorably by only 28 percent of independents, while 47 percent had an unfavorable opinion.
On the other hand, Trump's favorability rating among independents has declined. In the same poll from July 19 to 20, 35 percent of independents had a favorable opinion of the former president. However, this figure dropped to 27 percent in the most recent poll.
Looking at the overall sample from this week's poll, Harris has not only outperformed Trump but has also improved her standing from the previous week. Among all U.S. adults surveyed, 43 percent have a favorable view of Harris, compared to 42 percent with an unfavorable opinion. In the previous week's poll, only 35 percent viewed Harris favorably, while 46 percent had an unfavorable impression.
In contrast, Trump's favorability rating among all respondents has also declined compared to the previous week's poll. In the current poll, only 36 percent view Trump favorably, while 52 percent hold an unfavorable view. Last week, Trump garnered a slightly higher favorability rating of 40 percent, with 51 percent holding an unfavorable opinion.
It is worth noting that while these numbers reflect current public sentiment, polls have a margin of error. The overall margin of error for this poll is plus or minus 3 percentage points, with a slightly higher margin of error of plus or minus 5.5 percentage points for the subgroup of independents.
Newsweek has reached out to the Harris campaign for comments regarding these poll results. Meanwhile, when contacted by Newsweek, Trump's communications director shared a link to a recent The Telegraph/Redfield & Wilton Strategies poll, which showed Trump leading Harris in several swing states, including Pennsylvania, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona, Florida, and Minnesota. However, it should be noted that the poll's margin of error encompasses all states except Florida, Georgia, and Pennsylvania, and the two candidates were tied in Wisconsin.
These poll results indicate a shift in favorability among independent voters towards Kamala Harris, while Trump's popularity seems to have cooled off. As the political landscape continues to evolve, these numbers provide insight into the sentiments of American voters.
