In a recently released video, Vice President Kamala Harris delivered scathing criticism aimed at Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance, accusing him of being a "rubber stamp" for former President Donald Trump's "extreme agenda." Harris's remarks come ahead of Vance's acceptance speech at the upcoming Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
Harris emphasized Trump's intention to select a running mate who would unquestioningly support his policies, stating, "Trump looked for someone he knew would be a rubber stamp for his extreme agenda." She further warned that Vance's loyalty lies solely with Trump rather than with the country.
The vice president also cited an interview where Vance expressed his skepticism towards certifying the 2020 election unless states submitted pro-Trump electors, echoing unsubstantiated claims of election fraud. Harris highlighted Vance's willingness to carry out Trump's plans to overturn the election, contrasting his stance with that of former Vice President Mike Pence.
Additionally, Harris criticized Vance's position on abortion. During his 2022 Senate campaign, Vance expressed support for a national abortion ban at 15 weeks, with certain exceptions. The vice president also pointed out Vance's recent vote against a Democrat-led bill that aimed to protect access to in vitro fertilization (IVF), which was ultimately blocked by Senate Republicans.
Harris further referenced Project 2025, a controversial initiative proposed by conservative think tank the Heritage Foundation. Authored by several conservatives, including former Trump administration officials, the initiative offers policy recommendations for a potential second Trump term. Critics argue that Project 2025 promotes authoritarianism and Christian nationalism, with proposals like replacing civil service employees with Trump loyalists and eliminating the Department of Education.
While Trump has distanced himself from Project 2025, stating his lack of knowledge regarding the initiative and criticizing certain aspects as "absolutely ridiculous and abysmal," Harris cautioned that Vance would be instrumental in implementing the plan if elected. She highlighted the potential impact on critical programs like Head Start and Medicare, vowing to prevent its realization.
Harris revealed that she had a brief and respectful phone conversation with Vance following his nomination, leaving a congratulatory voicemail. However, her overriding message conveyed doubts about Vance's ability to prioritize the interests of the American people over Trump's extreme agenda.
As Vance prepares to address the Republican National Convention, the spotlight intensifies on his nomination and the policies he would potentially support if elected as vice president. Whether his acceptance speech addresses these concerns remains to be seen, but Harris's video serves as a strong critique of his alliance with Trump and his stance on key issues.
