In a recent episode of "The Source with Kaitlan Collins," CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins debunked former President Trump's claim that the judge presiding over his hush-money trial, Judge Juan Merchan, is preventing him from bringing in an election expert to testify. Collins clarified that Trump's attorneys had the opportunity to call the expert, but ultimately chose not to do so due to limitations set by the judge.
During the show, Collins addressed Trump's posts on the new social media platform TruthSocial, where the former president criticized Judge Merchan, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, and others involved in the trial. Trump claimed in his posts that the judge was denying him the opportunity to present a highly respected election law expert who would assert his innocence.
Collins stated that she was present in the courtroom when the discussions regarding the election expert took place. Contrary to Trump's assertions, the judge did not block the expert's testimony. Instead, the judge expressed concerns about broadening the scope of the expert's testimony, as it might lead to a "battle of the experts." Consequently, Trump's legal team opted not to call the election expert.
The hush-money trial, in which Trump is facing 34 felony counts, saw the defense resting its case this Tuesday. Closing arguments will take place after the Memorial Day Weekend, following which the 12-person jury, selected in mid-April, will begin deliberations.
Collins highlighted the significance of the upcoming week, stating that by this time next week, a verdict might be reached, determining whether Donald Trump will be convicted or acquitted. The jury, composed of his peers in Manhattan, will hold the decision-making power.
Trump's ongoing criticism of the judge and district attorney reflects his frustration with the trial's proceedings. Notably, he accused Judge Merchan of having disqualifying conflicts and criticized the lack of a requirement for a unanimous decision on key parts of the case.
As the trial nears its conclusion, all eyes are on the jury, who will now have the weighty responsibility of determining the former president's fate. The outcome of the trial will undoubtedly have significant implications for Trump's legacy and political future.
