The Wall Street Journal initially reported on the potential deal and the anticipated settlement amount. However, as of now, the settlement has not been officially finalized.

A spokesperson for the Justice Department stated on Wednesday that they could not confirm the reporting by the Wall Street Journal at this time. The settlement comes after more than 100 women collectively sought over $1 billion in damages from the federal government, citing the FBI's failure to intervene and stop Nassar's abusive behavior.

In 2018, Michigan State University, where Nassar had been employed, reached a settlement agreement of $500 million with women and girls who came forward with allegations of abuse. Additionally, in 2021, USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee finalized a $380 million settlement with the victims.

Nassar, who pleaded guilty to abusing 10 patients out of the 265 who accused him, is also serving a prison sentence of up to 175 years. Notable survivors include USA Gymnastics national team members such as McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, Sabrina Vega, Ashton Locklear, Kyla Ross, Simone Biles, and Alyssa Baumann. Furthermore, Nassar pleaded guilty to possessing child sex abuse images separately.

The Justice Department's Inspector General, Michael Horowitz, released a report in 2021 stating that a special agent from the Indianapolis field office instructed the FBI to release a false statement to the media in 2017, claiming they had responded promptly to the Nassar allegations. Media outlets had raised questions about the FBI's inaction between July 2015, when USA Gymnastics initially raised concerns, and September 2016, when police finally searched Nassar's residence.

According to the report, at the time, the FBI's office had only interviewed one of the three victims who had come forward and were willing to cooperate with the investigation. It stated that Nassar continued to abuse patients until he was arrested by local authorities in November 2016.

While negotiations are reportedly nearing their conclusion, the final settlement amount and details are yet to be officially confirmed. The Justice Department's discussions aim to provide some measure of justice and compensation for the victims of Larry Nassar, whose actions have had a profound impact on the lives of numerous individuals.
