According to sources familiar with the matter, the Justice Department and attorneys representing 100 victims of Larry Nassar are reportedly in the final stages of negotiating a settlement. The settlement, which could amount to tens of millions of dollars, aims to resolve the claims that the FBI failed to properly investigate allegations of abuse by the former women's U.S. gymnastics team doctor.
Although no deal has been finalized, negotiations are said to be at a sensitive stage. Once completed, the settlement would effectively resolve a series of tort claims filed against the Justice Department and the FBI in 2022 by a long list of athletes and patients, including prominent figures such as Maggie Nichols, Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, and McKayla Maroney.
The claims collectively sought approximately $1 billion in damages. They were brought forward after the Department of Justice announced its decision not to pursue criminal charges against agents who were found by the DOJ's inspector general to have failed in properly investigating the allegations against Nassar.
The inspector general's report revealed that the FBI was made aware of Nassar's misconduct but failed to take action for over 14 months. During this period, it is alleged that Nassar went on to abuse at least 40 more girls and women. In 2017, Nassar pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 60 years in prison for child pornography and other charges. He later pleaded guilty in 2018 and received an additional 40 to 175-year sentence for multiple counts of sexual assault of minors.
Despite the reported settlement negotiations, attorneys representing the victims, as well as the FBI and the Justice Department, have declined to comment on the matter.
This potential settlement marks a significant step towards addressing the legal repercussions surrounding Nassar's abuse and the FBI's handling of the case. If finalized, it would provide some measure of compensation for the victims who had suffered deeply as a result of Nassar's actions, while also holding accountable those responsible for the failure to promptly investigate the allegations against him.
