### Trump’s Federal Election Interference Case Temporarily Halted by Judge

In a notable development, a judge has agreed to special counsel Jack Smith's request to suspend all remaining deadlines in Donald Trump's federal election interference case. This decision gives Smith until December 2 to outline his next steps.

Judge Tanya Chutkan approved the motion, acknowledging the "unprecedented circumstance" of Trump’s recent election victory. In a recent filing, Smith highlighted that Trump is expected to be certified as president-elect on January 6, 2025, and inaugurated on January 20. Smith argued that this projected change in Trump's status necessitates a pause in pretrial proceedings to allow his office to evaluate the situation and align with Department of Justice policy, which traditionally refrains from prosecuting sitting presidents.

The defense did not raise objections to the special counsel's request, and the judge accepted the motion with little delay. This decision comes just two days after Trump was declared the winner of the 2024 election and amidst reports that the Justice Department is considering ending the federal criminal cases against the president-elect.

As legal analysts like MSNBC’s Jordan Rubin have pointed out, it is improbable that federal cases against Trump will advance now that he is close to re-entering the White House. Similarly, proceedings in state cases from New York and Georgia may also be stalled during his term in office. Trump continues to deny any wrongdoing in all associated criminal cases.

Jack Smith, who has played a central role in the prosecutorial efforts against Trump, has become a significant target for the president-elect. Trump has made public statements about intending to dismiss Smith promptly should he assume office again. Additionally, figures within Trump's circle, including Elon Musk and Mike Davis, have issued calls for Smith's prosecution.
