In the wake of Iran's retaliatory attack on Israel, Jordan finds itself in a precarious and dangerous position as regional tensions escalate. The attack, which involved the interception of Iranian drones and missiles aimed at Israel, marked the first time in over three decades that Jordanian airspace was violated in such a manner. The incident has brought Jordan's fragile geopolitical situation into sharp focus.

Geographically situated between Israel and the West Bank on one side and Iran's neighbor Iraq on the other, Jordan finds itself caught between competing factions. To the north lies Syria, a failing state under Iran's influence, and to the east, pro-Iran militias exert their control in neighboring Iraq. These factors further complicate Jordan's delicate balance between its close alliance with the United States, its peace treaty with Israel, and its relationship with its Palestinian population.

Amidst the escalating tensions, Jordanian officials were notably silent for hours after the attack, leaving citizens uneasy. Videos of interceptions and fragments of projectiles that landed in parts of the country circulated on social media, sparking criticism of Jordan's perceived role in shielding Israel while Palestinians in Gaza faced Israeli bombardment. The kingdom's leadership has been walking a tightrope, striving to balance mounting public anger with its commitments to regional security.

Prime Minister Bisher al-Khasawneh, addressing the issue, emphasized the interceptions were carried out to protect Jordanian citizens and residential areas. Nevertheless, concerns persist within Jordan about potential future threats. Iran issued a warning stating that if Jordan participates in any possible action against Tehran, it would become the next target.

In response to Iran's harmful disinformation, Jordan summoned the Iranian ambassador in Amman to protest these claims. Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi cautioned that Jordan would retaliate against such disinformation and highlighted the longstanding threats the country faces from Iranian-backed groups involved in smuggling drugs and weapons.

To demonstrate its commitment to safeguarding its people, Jordan has increased air sorties and deployed fighter jets to patrol its skies. King Abdullah, during a visit to the northern governorate of Mafraq, reiterated that Jordan will not allow itself to become a battlefield, emphasizing the priority of protecting Jordanian citizens.

Alongside these challenges, the Jordanian monarchy has been facing internal pressure to do more for the Palestinians in Gaza. Thousands have taken to the streets since October, demanding stronger action from Jordan, including severing ties with Israel and closing the embassy in Amman.

As tensions continue to escalate in the region, Jordan's relationship with Israel, strained for years, has reached a critical point. Foreign Minister Safadi acknowledged that the Jordan-Israel peace treaty is now viewed as a mere document collecting dust, reflecting the deteriorating ties between the two countries.

With the threat of an all-out war in the Middle East looming, Jordan, a key Western ally known for its stability in the region, faces an increasingly challenging and complex landscape. The kingdom's leaders have emphasized the need to prioritize de-escalation in Gaza as the region navigates this dangerous period.
