Comedian John Mulaney, known for his witty humor, recently shared his experiences of marrying into his wife Olivia Munn's Vietnamese American family during an appearance on "Late Night with Seth Meyers." The couple, who tied the knot in July, welcomed their first child, Malcolm Hiệp, in 2021, coinciding with the Year of the Ox on the lunar calendar.
During his interview, Mulaney expressed his admiration for his new family, stating, "They're the best, man." His mother-in-law, Kim, who is originally from Vietnam, was present in the audience, adding to the heartwarming atmosphere. Mulaney expressed his gratitude for her presence, saying, "I'm so happy she came." He humorously mentioned that one member of his wife's family is always ready to accompany them anywhere, showcasing their welcoming nature.
The comedian also highlighted the openness of his wife's Vietnamese family, contrasting it with his own, which he described as "maybe the most white, caucasian" and closed off on various topics, including money and health. In contrast, Mulaney praised the Luong family for their willingness to discuss anything freely, even asking direct questions like "how much money you have" and "why you so skinny?"
Mulaney also poked fun at the unique Oklahoma Vietnamese accent, which he impersonated during his interview. He acknowledged that while some may find it offensive, he felt it was necessary to bring attention to this specific accent, as only a handful of people could potentially be offended by it.
Marrying into a Vietnamese family has opened up a new world for Mulaney, introducing him to Asian grocery stores like H Mart and Little Saigon in Orange County, California. He marveled at the exotic produce available at these markets, describing them as "avatar fruits" and expressing his fascination with discovering new fruits.
The young family made headlines earlier this year when Munn publicly shared her breast cancer diagnosis, leading to treatment that included a double mastectomy and a hysterectomy. Despite this challenging experience, Mulaney and Munn remain strong, demonstrating resilience and unity as they navigate their life together.
