Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid became embroiled in a heated altercation with Inquirer columnist Marcus Hayes in the locker room following the team's Saturday loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. The confrontation, witnessed by multiple media members, Sixers players, and staffers, has sparked an NBA investigation, with the Sixers pledging full cooperation.
Eyewitnesses reported that Embiid struck Hayes, making contact with his neck and collarbone, and subsequently shoved him. The conflict arose from Hayes' recent critical columns about Embiid's absence from the start of the 2024-25 regular season due to a knee condition requiring surgery last February. Adding fuel to the fire, Hayes also mentioned Embiid's late brother and son, both named Arthur, in an October 23 column, which infuriated the player.
Embiid, who was moving from his locker towards Hayes, voiced his outrage over the intrusive references to his family. Although Hayes later removed those personal references and offered an apology via X (formerly Twitter), the apology did not pacify Embiid. The star center made it clear that while he can tolerate criticism regarding his basketball performance or health, he draws the line at family matters, warning Hayes against any future mentions.
With the altercation escalating, Sixers staff and fellow teammates had to step in to separate the two, leading to Embiid's quick exit from the locker room. Hayes was subsequently escorted to a meeting with Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey and general manager Elton Brand, who expressed their regret and deemed Embiid's actions unacceptable.
The NBA quickly acknowledged the incident and has begun an investigation. Sixers spokesman confirmed that the team is cooperating with the league's efforts. Meanwhile, Inquirer editor and senior vice president Gabriel Escobar denounced the physical confrontation and emphasized the seriousness of the situation.
The Sixers were reportedly aware that Hayes would be present on Saturday and had hoped to facilitate a dialogue to clear the air between him and Embiid. The team, which leaves for a three-game road trip against the Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Clippers, and Los Angeles Lakers, continues to deal with the fallout from the altercation.
Embiid, who was the NBA MVP in 2023 and recently signed a three-year, $193 million contract extension, has had a career marked by both accolades and injuries. Despite his significant contributions to the team and city, including a gold medal win with Team USA at the Summer Olympics, tensions have escalated over the repeated references to his health and personal life.
As the investigation unfolds, the NBA and the Sixers face the task of addressing the incident and maintaining professionalism and respect within and around the team environment.
