Speaking at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, Biden expressed concerns about the potential influence of President Donald Trump on the composition of the Supreme Court if reelected.
During the event, which featured appearances by former President Barack Obama and comedian Jimmy Kimmel, Biden highlighted the current conservative majority in the Supreme Court and its recent ruling on Roe vs. Wade. He pointed out that Justice Clarence Thomas had hinted at the reconsideration of various issues, including in-vitro fertilization, contraception, and other fundamental rights.
Seeking to reassure the attendees, Biden firmly stated that he would not allow the reversal of rights achieved under his administration. "Not on my watch," he emphatically declared, drawing applause from the crowd. He further emphasized the significance of the upcoming presidential term, emphasizing that the next president could potentially nominate two new Supreme Court justices.
Biden expressed concerns about the impact of Trump appointing two more justices, labeling it as "one of the scariest parts" of a potential second term for Trump. He referenced Justice Samuel Alito's controversial display of an inverted American flag at his home earlier this year, a gesture associated with false claims made by Trump supporters about the 2020 election being "stolen."
Justice Alito later confirmed that his wife had hung the flag in response to a sign in their neighborhood expressing anti-Trump sentiment. However, he refused to recuse himself from deciding on two pending cases involving Trump and the January 6th attack on the Capitol.
The current Supreme Court consists of six conservative justices, three of whom were appointed by Trump: Neil Gorsuch in 2017, Brett Kavanaugh in 2018, and Amy Coney Barrett in 2020. Biden's remarks shed light on the potential implications for the court's direction if Trump were to have the opportunity to appoint additional justices.
The fundraising event in Los Angeles, attended by prominent figures like actors Julia Roberts and George Clooney, exceeded the previous record set by Biden earlier this year during a Manhattan fundraiser featuring Obama and former President Bill Clinton. The significant funds raised demonstrate strong support for Biden's campaign and highlight the growing concern among Democratic donors about the future composition of the Supreme Court.
As the November election draws near, Biden's message resonates with supporters and underscores the importance of the presidency in shaping the makeup of the highest court in the land. The battle to preserve and protect fundamental rights remains a central focus of the Democratic campaign, as they seek to prevent potential setbacks in areas such as reproductive rights and same-sex marriage.
