In a recent episode of the Grilling JR podcast, WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross delved into the controversial gimmick of Goldust and the restrictions placed on the character during his time in WWE. Ross shed light on Vince McMahon's mandate to prevent Dustin Rhodes, the man behind the Goldust persona, from engaging in certain behaviors that were deemed inappropriate.

Goldust, who had also made a mark in WCW before joining WWE, became a highly unique and controversial character in the pro wrestling world. The persona involved provocative actions and gestures that often pushed the boundaries of what was considered acceptable for television.

Ross recollected McMahon's directive, stating, "That was a specific mandate from the Head Honcho. There's just things that we did that were not received very well at all. Not received at all in a very positive way. Not entertaining, not funny. Just jaw-dropping controversy."

To retain the essence of the Goldust character while appeasing audience sensibilities, WWE creative had to take steps to refine the gimmick. One of the changes involved eliminating the act of Goldust rubbing against other individuals, a behavior that had garnered numerous complaints for being inappropriate for children.

"We had to start taking things away from Goldust that would apply to his presentation. And that included rubbing against somebody," Ross disclosed. "Because the character itself was controversial enough without adding extra. It's just going to be that way."

Ross also highlighted the constant evolution of the Goldust character, with the creative team actively adjusting and modifying elements of the gimmick. Each night brought new tweaks and eliminations to the routine, all in an effort to strike the right balance between entertainment and controversy.

While Goldust's gimmick indeed sparked a lot of talk and polarized opinions, it left an indelible mark on wrestling history. The persona challenged traditional norms and pushed the envelope, making Goldust an unforgettable character in the industry.

Although some praised the innovation and audacity of the Goldust character, there were a substantial number of individuals who remained critical, particularly regarding its suitability for young viewers. The controversy surrounding the gimmick forced WWE to exercise creative control and limit certain aspects of Goldust's behavior.

As the interview with Jim Ross demonstrated, the complexities of the Goldust character required constant attention and adjustments. While it may have been a contentious figure for some, there is no denying that Goldust's legacy in the wrestling world continues to be a topic of debate and fascination.
