Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance refused to provide a definitive answer when questioned about whether former President Donald Trump would veto a national abortion ban, during an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday. Vance stated that he had learned his lesson about speaking on behalf of the president without consulting him first.
Vance stated that while Trump has made it clear that he does not support a national abortion ban, he believes decisions regarding abortion policy should be made by individual states. "He wants abortion policy to be made by the states because he thinks... we can disagree," Vance explained.
When pressed further on the possibility of Trump vetoing a national abortion ban as president, Vance avoided giving a direct response. Instead, he asserted that it would be "ridiculous to talk about vetoing a piece of legislation that isn't going to come before the president in the first place."
During Tuesday's debate, Trump himself sidestepped the question of whether he would veto a national abortion ban. However, back in August, Vance confidently stated that Trump would indeed veto such legislation because he does not support it. Trump, in response, denied having discussed the issue with Vance and made it clear that he did not endorse Vance speaking on his behalf.
This lack of clarity surrounding Trump's potential stance on a national abortion ban raises questions about his position and highlights the ongoing debate within the Republican Party over this contentious issue. With the upcoming election, voters may seek more definitive answers from the candidates on their respective abortion policies.
As the campaign progresses, Vance's reluctance to speak definitively on Trump's potential actions regarding a national abortion ban may continue to be scrutinized, particularly by those seeking clarity on the stance of the Trump campaign and the Republican Party as a whole.
