### Scholten Touts Electability in Iowa's Democratic Primary
J.D. Scholten, a former congressional candidate and current minor-league baseball pitcher, believes that his track record positions him as the Democrats’ best chance to challenge Republican Senator Joni Ernst in Iowa. Scholten highlighted his relatively strong performance in electoral contests compared to other Democrats on the ticket, despite ultimately facing defeats in his bids for Congress and the State House.
Representing western Iowa, a staunchly Republican region, Scholten emphasized his ability to resonate with voters in a red state. "If we're going to have a primary on electability, I think it's very clear that we represent a very good chance for the Democrats and the best chance to take on Joni Ernst," he asserted.
The upcoming midterm elections are pivotal for the Democratic Party, especially in traditionally Republican states like Iowa. To regain control of the Senate, Democrats need to secure their existing seats in Georgia, Michigan, and New Hampshire while flipping at least four Republican-held seats. In addition to Iowa, other crucial states include Alaska, Mississippi, and Texas. Competitive races are also expected in North Carolina and Maine, where Republican Senators Thom Tillis and Susan Collins are vulnerable to well-funded Democratic challengers.
Scholten's full-time campaigning will commence after his baseball season concludes in early September with the Sioux City Explorers, an independent team based in his hometown. Scholten, 45, views his involvement in baseball as a unique way to connect with voters. "This is how I win votes, talking to people who come to the games who aren't necessarily politically active," he stated. He noted that engaging with fans and teammates, particularly younger men, could help address the Democratic Party's challenges in garnering support from that demographic. "I talk to young men every single day. I talk with my catcher, who's 21 years younger than me," Scholten added.
As Democrats strategize their approach for the midterms, Scholten’s candidacy emphasizes grassroots connections and electability in traditionally Republican strongholds.
