In a recent interview during the Celtics vs. Lakers Summer League game, Jaylen Brown addressed the public frustrations he expressed after being left off the USA Basketball men's roster for the Paris Olympics 2024. Despite the disappointment, Brown made it clear that his relationship with teammate Derrick White remains strong, putting to rest any doubts that his grievances could have spilled over onto White.
"I called Derrick right away," Brown stated. "Just to make sure there's no confusion, my love for you and all of that. He knew that, and he did. You don't always gotta make everything public. Me and D-White are good."
Brown's exclusion from the Team USA roster may have come as a surprise given his outstanding performance during the previous NBA season. The talented wing had just won a championship and was named NBA Finals MVP, making his omission all the more puzzling.
USA Basketball managing director Grant Hill recently explained the decision, mentioning the tough choices they had to make when assembling the team. While Brown publicly voiced his frustration, he took the opportunity to praise White, who ended up being chosen as Kawhi Leonard's replacement after Leonard withdrew from the Olympics.
Despite raising eyebrows by criticizing Nike, USA Basketball's apparel partner, for their role in the roster decisions, Brown did not elaborate further. He did, however, hint that there might be more to come regarding his connection with the company and the decision-making process.
When asked about his reaction to the snub, Brown expressed his happiness for Derrick White and the other Celtics players who made the team, stating that he wasn't surprised by the decision. Regardless, he intends to use this exclusion as motivation for the upcoming season, while also taking time to enjoy his summer and bask in the glow of their championship victory.
"Now, we gotta get back to work," Brown declared. "Right when that burden gets alleviated, you get more motivation to follow it. For me, it's back to ground one. My mindset is championship is over now."
While Jaylen Brown may have been left off the Paris Olympics roster, his focus remains steadfast, and he is determined to continue his quest for success with the Boston Celtics in the upcoming season.
