In a hearing at Los Angeles County Superior Court on April 9, renowned former Tonight Show host Jay Leno was granted conservatorship of his wife, Mavis Leno. The decision comes after Mavis was diagnosed with advanced dementia.
During the hearing, Mavis' lawyer affirmed her agreement with the conservatorship and praised the care she is receiving from her husband. The judge also expressed confidence in Jay's ability to provide for Mavis, stating that she is in the least restrictive environment and receiving excellent care.
Jay Leno, 73, expressed gratitude for the judge's decision and revealed that he is actively involved in estate planning. As their assets are considered common property, no issues are expected to arise during the conservatorship.
It was reported earlier this month that Mavis "consents" to the conservatorship and does not object to Jay serving as conservator. The recommendation for approval was formally made by Mavis' court-appointed counsel, Ronald Ostrin, who praised Jay as a caring and devoted husband.
In the filed report, Ostrin provided an update on Mavis' condition, noting her bouts of disorientation and occasional confusion about her husband's identity and her own birth date. Mavis also reportedly experiences periods of rumination about her deceased parents.
Nevertheless, the report emphasized the long-term, loving, and supportive nature of the couple's relationship, underscoring Mavis' trust in Jay as her protector.
This development comes after Jay recently brought Mavis to his stand-up comedy show at the Hollywood Improv comedy club in West Hollywood, demonstrating his commitment to supporting her throughout their challenging journey.
Jay Leno originally filed for conservatorship in January, aiming to establish a living trust for Mavis to ensure her future care if he were to pass away.
The grant of conservatorship marks an important step in the ongoing care of Mavis Leno as she battles advanced dementia. Jay Leno's dedication to his wife's well-being and his proactive approach in managing their affairs showcases his commitment to providing the support she needs during this difficult period of their lives.
