Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa has made the decision to cancel his highly anticipated dearMoon mission aboard SpaceX's Starship, citing uncertainties surrounding the rocket's readiness. Maezawa had originally booked a private trip around the moon for himself and eight hand-picked artists, but with the project facing delays, the billionaire made the difficult choice to call off the mission.
Maezawa signed the contract in 2018, with the expectation that dearMoon would launch by the end of 2023. However, as SpaceX's Starship is still undergoing development, it remains uncertain when the rocket will be ready for launch. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Maezawa expressed his regret for the cancellation, apologizing to those who had been excited about the project.
The dearMoon mission was set to include a crew of notable artists and creators such as Tim Dodd, creator of the YouTube channel Everyday Astronaut, DJ Steve Aoki, and photographer Karim Iliya. Sadly, their lunar dreams have been dashed with the cancellation of the mission.
In addition to the dearMoon mission, Maezawa had also held a contest to select a partner for the journey, but this too was short-lived and subsequently canceled. The cancellation has left the crew members disappointed, as they had been eagerly anticipating the opportunity to embark on this historic voyage.
SpaceX's Starship and Super Heavy booster represent the world's tallest and most powerful rocket, yet the early test flights have faced setbacks. The company's first uncrewed Starship test flight in April 2023 failed to reach space, while a second test in November of the same year also fell short. It was not until March 14 of this year that Starship achieved its first successful trip to space, although it did not survive the intended splashdown.
Despite the setback of the dearMoon mission, SpaceX is continuing its development of a crewed Starship to support NASA's Artemis program. The company is preparing for its fourth Starship test flight on June 5, as part of its efforts to land NASA astronauts on the moon by 2026.
Maezawa's decision to cancel the dearMoon mission highlights the challenges faced by ambitious space programs. However, it does not deter other billionaires from pursuing their space ambitions. American billionaire Jared Isaacman has already booked the first crewed orbital flight of Starship as part of his Polaris Program. Additionally, billionaire Dennis Tito and his wife Akiko have reserved another private trip around the moon aboard SpaceX's Starship.
As the future of space exploration continues to unfold, it remains to be seen when Maezawa's dream of a lunar adventure will come to fruition. For now, the dearMoon mission is grounded, but the search for new opportunities in the cosmos will undoubtedly persist.
