**Israeli Forces Withdraw from Kamal Adwan Hospital Amid Widespread Damage and Detentions**
In a recent development, Israeli forces have evacuated Kamal Adwan Hospital, leaving the medical facility in chaos after detaining dozens of healthcare workers and patients, as well as causing significant damage. This hospital, one of the last operational in northern Gaza, has been severely impacted by the ongoing military conflict, the Gaza Health Ministry reported.
The hospital was raided and shelled amid a three-week Israeli offensive in northern Gaza, leading to an urgent call from Gaza Health Ministry's field hospitals director, Marwan al-Hams, for the World Health Organization (WHO) to assist in evacuating the wounded. Al-Hams revealed that the Israeli forces destroyed vital medical supplies, preventing medics from providing essential care.
Before the raid, the hospital housed over 600 individuals, including patients and their companions. Reports indicate that at least 44 of the hospital's 70 staff members were detained by Israeli forces, though 14, including the hospital's director Hussam Abu Safia, were later released. The WHO chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has highlighted the dire situation in Gaza, pointing to a severe shortage of medical supplies and limited access to life-saving care.
Tareq Abu Azzoum of Al Jazeera, reporting from central Gaza, noted extensive damage to the hospital's pharmaceutical warehouse and ICU, emphasizing the facility's importance as a medical lifeline for many Palestinians. Footage from the scene showed the disarray, with bullet cartridges scattered outside and widespread damage inside the hospital.
Nurse Mayssoun Alian described the chaotic scenes during the raid, stating that Israeli forces surrounded the hospital and evacuated those seeking shelter, separating men from women and stripping the men of their clothes. Another witness recounted the destruction of the hospital’s pharmacy and the killing of two children in the ICU after the generators and oxygen supply were damaged.
This incident marks the 14th attack on Kamal Adwan Hospital, according to hospital spokesperson Hisham Sakani. The Health Ministry reported that detained personnel lack access to basic necessities, and additional attacks across Gaza have left several hospitals barely functional.
The UN special rapporteur on health recently termed these systematic assaults on healthcare workers and facilities as "medicide." The Israeli military, while not commenting on these specific actions, claimed they were targeting "terrorists and terrorist infrastructure" near the hospital.
The UN and UNICEF have both stated that northern Gaza is suffering catastrophic conditions, with critical shortages of food, water, fuel, and medical supplies exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. Israeli military strikes in Jabalia, Beit Hanoon, and Beit Lahiya have left approximately 800 people dead over three weeks, further highlighting the severity of the situation in Gaza.
