In a shocking and devastating incident, an Israeli airstrike targeted a school playground in Gaza, resulting in the loss of 31 lives and leaving dozens injured. The strike occurred near the gate of al-Awda school in Abasan al-Kabira, east of Khan Younis.
The horrifying incident was captured on video and broadcast by Al Jazeera. The footage showed a moment of respite and relative calm as a crowd of people gathered to watch a football match. However, the peaceful scene quickly turned into chaos when the opposing goalkeeper launched the ball back up the pitch, only to be interrupted by a deafening boom.
The airstrike sent everyone running for cover, with the person filming passing by dead bodies and severely injured individuals amidst the debris. The death toll from the strike rose to 31 on Wednesday, according to officials at the nearby Nasser hospital, along with dozens more injured.
Witnesses described the area as bustling with people and market traders when the strike occurred. The attack hit an area where hundreds of displaced people from villages east of Khan Younis had set up makeshift camps. Mohammed Sukkar, a witness, revealed that they were sitting at the entrance of the school when suddenly, rockets were fired, without any warning.
Heartbreaking accounts of individuals who lost their loved ones emerged from the chaos. A Palestinian boy, who lost several relatives, expressed his sorrow, stating that a missile fell and destroyed everything, causing the loss of his uncle, cousins, and other relatives. Witnesses recounted the horror of seeing severed limbs and scattered body parts.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that they were reviewing reports of civilian harm and that the incident was under investigation. In a statement, the IDF claimed that the strike targeted a terrorist from the military wing of Hamas, who was allegedly involved in a previous massacre.
These repeated attacks on schools sheltering displaced Palestinians have drawn strong condemnation from the international community. The German Foreign Ministry called the killing of people seeking shelter in schools unacceptable and demanded an immediate investigation. Wednesday's attack marked the fourth incident targeting or near schools in just four days.
Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (Unrwa), expressed deep concern over the situation. Lazzarini revealed that two-thirds of Unrwa's schools in Gaza had been targeted, with some even being bombed out, since the start of the war. Schools, which were once safe places of education and hope for children, have now tragically become overcrowded shelters leading to death and misery.
The tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the toll that the ongoing conflict in Gaza is taking on innocent lives. As the world mourns the loss of those affected by this senseless violence, there is an urgent call for an end to the targeting of schools and for a lasting solution to bring peace and stability to the region.
