In a tragic turn of events, an Israeli air strike on a house in Gaza's southern city of Rafah resulted in the death of at least 10 people, including six children. The strike occurred in the western Tal as-Sultan neighborhood, as Israel continues its nearly seven-month offensive in the besieged Palestinian territory.
Funerals were held on Saturday for the victims, according to Gaza's civil defense. At al-Najjar Hospital, where the main morgue is situated, heartbroken relatives wept and embraced the white-shrouded bodies of the children. The pain was evident as a mourning grandmother whispered to her beloved grandchild, "Hamza, my beloved, your hair looks so pretty."
Among the fatalities were Abdel-Fattah Sobhi Radwan, his wife Najlaa Ahmed Aweidah, and their three children, as confirmed by Radwan's brother-in-law, Ahmed Barhoum. Barhoum, who experienced an unfathomable loss himself, lost his wife, Rawan Radwan, and their five-year-old daughter, Alaa.
Barhoum, devastated and sobbing, condemned the attack, describing it as a world devoid of human values and morals. "They bombed a house full of displaced people, women, and children. The only martyrs were women and children," he affirmed.
The distressing scene at the hospital was described by Al Jazeera's correspondent Hani Mahmoud, who reported from Rafah. Mahmoud mentioned that the bodies, primarily children, were wrapped in blood-soaked white sheets. He also spoke to a doctor who conveyed the devastating wounds and extensive burns suffered by the victims. The doctor emphasized that even if the children had survived the journey to the hospital, their severe injuries would have proved fatal due to the lack of immediate medical resources in the current situation.
Reports indicate that the Israeli military's assault on Rafah continued on Saturday, with no sign of a let-up in the fighting, as stated by Al Jazeera's correspondent Tareq Abu Azzoum. Rafah has been a target of increased Israeli military strikes in recent weeks, leading to speculation about a potential military incursion into the city.
In a virtual meeting held on Thursday, US and Israeli officials discussed the possibility of a Rafah incursion, according to two Gaza war monitors, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) and the Critical Threats Project (CTP). Israel allegedly shared its plan to relocate around 1.4 million Palestinian civilians out of Rafah ahead of the promised ground invasion. However, concerns were raised about the lack of provisions for access to vital resources like food, water, and other civil services.
As tensions escalate, Israeli strikes were reported in other areas of the Gaza Strip on Saturday, including the Jabalia, Nuseirat, Maghazi, and Bureij refugee camps.
Since October 7, the war on Gaza has resulted in the staggering loss of over 34,000 lives and left over 76,900 wounded. The situation remains dire, as Israel's offensive continues to ravage the already besieged Palestinian territory.
