Israel's war cabinet has reportedly approved an expansion of its battle plan to include the densely populated city of Rafah, in a move that could see the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) enter the area. The decision comes following increasing tensions between Israel and the United States, with President Biden expressing concern over the rising civilian casualties in Gaza.

Less than 48 hours ago, President Biden told CNN that the US would withhold munitions shipments from Israel if it were to invade Rafah, which Israel claims is the last remaining stronghold for Hamas terrorists. However, according to sources familiar with the matter, Israel's expansion plan is said to be a "measured expansion" that will not cross the "red line" set by the US on Rafah, as reported by Axios.

Despite the expansion plan, a majority of the war cabinet has instructed Israeli negotiators to continue their efforts towards a possible hostage exchange and ceasefire agreement with Hamas. This instruction was given despite objections from hawkish cabinet ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, who had called for the suspension of negotiations and an immediate invasion of Rafah.

On Sunday, Hamas envoys and Israeli leaders met in Cairo for negotiations. The talks were focused on reaching an agreement that would result in the release of hostages and a 40-day ceasefire. However, the negotiations broke down as the two sides failed to agree on terms, with Hamas insisting on a permanent end to hostilities, a condition rejected by Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

In the midst of these developments, Israeli tanks have already seized control of the Rafah Crossing, the crucial supply route between Gaza and Egypt. Skirmishes between IDF troops and Hamas terrorists have ensued, while thousands of Palestinians attempt to flee the city, estimated to be home to over a million refugees.

The White House has not responded to a request for comment regarding the latest events. The situation remains tense as Israel expands its battle plan, the negotiations between Hamas and Israel collapse, and concerns over civilian casualties persist.
