The news was confirmed by renowned NBA insiders Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, as well as Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Despite receiving a tempting four-year, $72.5 million offer from the Knicks, Hartenstein chose to test free agency, ultimately opting for the Thunder's higher offer. It was no secret that the Knicks were eager to retain the talented center, but financial limitations prohibited them from matching the Thunder's offer.

Hartenstein's departure from the Knicks did not come as a complete shock, as reports had emerged days earlier that the organization was growing increasingly pessimistic about their chances of retaining him. The Knicks were aware that Hartenstein would likely receive offers that surpassed the maximum amount they could offer, and unfortunately, that turned out to be the case.

Sources close to Hartenstein revealed that leaving the Knicks was a difficult decision for the player, as he had enjoyed his time with the team and genuinely wanted to stay. However, the significant difference in average salary and the lower cost of living in Oklahoma City influenced his choice.

During his two seasons with the Knicks, Hartenstein proved his worth, stepping up as the team's starting center due to Mitchell Robinson's recurring injury issues. The 26-year-old showcased his abilities, averaging 7.8 points and 8.3 rebounds in 75 games. Head coach Tom Thibodeau recognized Hartenstein's potential and utilized him as a starter for 49 games, a substantial increase in opportunities compared to his previous NBA seasons.

The Knicks had entered the offseason on a high note after an exhilarating playoff run. However, their ability to retain Hartenstein and forward OG Anunoby, another key free agent, was uncertain. Anunoby seemed likely to stay, given the Knicks' trade efforts to acquire him from the Toronto Raptors in exchange for RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley.

Hartenstein's departure raises questions about the future of the Knicks' frontcourt, particularly with Mitchell Robinson's injury history. Robinson is under contract until 2025-26, but concerns about his durability suggest that Hartenstein's return would have been a logical move for the team. Despite their desire to keep him, financial constraints ultimately led to his departure.

Hartenstein's decision to join the Oklahoma City Thunder will undoubtedly have an impact on both teams' future dynamics. While the Knicks will need to explore alternative options to bolster their frontcourt, the Thunder have acquired a promising center who has proven his value on the court. As the NBA offseason continues, fans will be eager to see how this move shapes the upcoming season.
