Iranian hackers have made efforts to influence the upcoming 2024 U.S. presidential election, according to U.S. intelligence agencies. The FBI announced that Iranian cyber actors sent unsolicited emails containing stolen information from former President Donald Trump's campaign to individuals associated with President Joe Biden's campaign. While there is no indication that the recipients replied to these emails, the FBI found that Iran had also targeted media organizations with stolen campaign materials.
In June, Iran launched a phishing campaign against both the Biden and Trump campaigns, successfully obtaining internal campaign materials from the Trump operation. Following this, in mid-August, the FBI, CISA, and ODNI issued a warning about ongoing efforts by the Iranian government to influence the election through cyber activities. The agencies pointed out that this malicious cyber activity is part of Iran's broader strategy to sow discord and undermine confidence in the U.S. electoral process.
Responding to these allegations, the Trump campaign called for more transparency from the Biden-Harris administration regarding the materials received and whether they were utilized. The Trump Campaign National Press Secretary expressed concerns about the potential use of hacked materials to harm President Trump, insinuating that Iran was supporting Harris and Biden due to their perceived stance against Iranian interests. In contrast, a spokesperson for the Harris-Walz campaign stated that they had cooperated with law enforcement authorities upon learning of the attempted influence operation and condemned any foreign interference in U.S. elections.
