In the recent spring game at Jack Trice Stadium, Iowa State's star quarterback, Rocco Becht, found himself on the sideline, watching his backups in action. Despite his desire to play, Becht rested and shivered alongside other skill position starters after participating in pre-spring game drills. He referred to a previous practice session as his own "spring game," where he put up impressive numbers.
Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell revealed that Becht's "spring game" consisted of approximately 125 plays, and Becht delivered a commendable performance. However, Becht himself couldn't recall the exact details, only stating that the plays were good.
Campbell emphasized that fans shouldn't read too much into the offensive display during the spring game. The focus was on evaluating the performance of young players and assessing their ability to step up for the upcoming fall season. Despite several offensive players being absent for various reasons, Campbell expressed confidence that the offense would be in excellent shape by the time the regular season begins.
One standout from the spring game was true freshman tailback Dylan Lee. Lee, with his impressive rushing ability, sprinted for a 17-yard touchdown and ended the game with 80 rushing yards on 17 carries. Becht praised Lee's performance, highlighting his ability to adapt and make decisive cuts. Lee might become a vital asset for the Cyclones alongside returning backs Abu Sama and Carson Hansen, as well as transfer player Jaylon Jackson.
Meanwhile, redshirt freshman placekicker Kyle Konrardy caught the attention of ISU fans. Konrardy showcased his skills by successfully converting four out of five field goal attempts, including three from a distance of more than 40 yards. Konrardy's performances were even more impressive considering the blustery conditions at the stadium.
On the defensive front, the Iowa State team recorded five sacks during the spring game. Linebacker Rylan Barnes and defensive linemen Zaimir Hawk, Trent Jones, Dom Orange, and Kenard Snyder contributed with one sack each. Coach Campbell highlighted the impressive performance of Kenard Snyder, who joined the team from Louisiana-Monroe and has made a significant impact during the spring season.
The backup quarterbacks, J.J. Kohl, Connor Moberly, Major Cantrell, and Tanner Hughes, collectively completed 15 out of 20 passes for a total of 103 yards. Notably, the team's top two returning receivers, Jaylin Noel and Jayden Higgins, did not participate in the spring game.
As for Becht, he had already made his mark during spring practices, proving his readiness to build upon his successful freshman season. Coach Campbell praised Becht's leadership skills and referred to him as a player who constantly strives for improvement. Becht's commitment to self-improvement has set a high standard for the team, and his presence on the sideline during the spring game demonstrated his confidence and leadership.
Becht himself expressed satisfaction with his performance throughout the spring season, claiming that it was the best spring he has experienced since joining the Iowa State team.
Despite limited playing time during the spring game, Iowa State fans remain excited about Becht's potential and eagerly anticipate his impact when the regular season commences.
