In a remarkable feat of efficiency, both sides of Interstate 95 in Norwalk, Connecticut have reopened just three days after a tanker truck collision caused a massive fire, melting an overpass and torching the highway. Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont praised the efforts of local and state police, fire departments, and other state agencies for their swift response in closing and repairing the road after the catastrophic blaze.

The incident occurred on Thursday morning at approximately 5:30 a.m. when a tanker truck, carrying a staggering 8,500 gallons of gasoline, collided with a tractor-trailer and another car near the Fairfield Avenue overpass near Exit 15 in Norwalk. According to NBC New York, a Chevy Camaro merging onto the southbound lane of the highway struck the tanker, which was traveling in the right lane. The impact propelled the fuel truck into the center lane, where it clipped a tractor-trailer.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident. However, the intense heat from the fire caused significant damage to the overpass, compromising its integrity and leading to its immediate demolition, as stated by Governor Lamont. Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto explained that the amount of gasoline in the tanker ignited directly beneath the bridge structure, causing the steel to overheat and warp.

Footage and photographs of the collision revealed a spectacular fireball, prompting officials to close the affected section of I-95. This particular stretch of highway serves as a vital link between New York and New England.

Efforts to address the aftermath of the incident were swiftly initiated by environmental crews, who worked diligently to clean up the spilled gasoline and firefighting foam. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection ensured that the runoff was confined to a retention pond and did not seep into the nearby Norwalk River. Approximately 4,000 gallons of unburnt gas were safely offloaded from the tanker.

Crews then began the arduous task of removing debris, including concrete and steel, from the road. NBC New York reported that extensive cleaning measures were undertaken before the process of milling, paving, and re-striping the highway could be carried out.
