**Boris Epshteyn's Influence on Trump's Transition and Controversial Proposal**

Boris Epshteyn, a close adviser to President-elect Donald J. Trump, continues to wield significant influence during the presidential transition, despite lacking any formal role. Epshteyn, who managed Trump's legal defenses in various criminal cases, recently proposed a surprising solution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict by suggesting he serve as a special envoy. This recommendation, given during a plane ride to Washington for a meeting with President Biden, raised concerns among those present due to Epshteyn’s lack of foreign policy experience and his current legal issues in Arizona related to the 2020 election.

Observers noted Trump's lack of immediate dismissal of Epshteyn’s suggestion, signifying the adviser’s considerable sway. Indeed, Epshteyn’s reach within Trump’s circle has swiftly grown, with even figures like Elon Musk expressing surprise at his level of authority. Besides his hands in diplomatic proposals, Epshteyn has been instrumental in staffing decisions, including the formation of Trump's desired Justice Department lineup, featuring loyal fighters and personal lawyers.

Epshteyn also played a critical role in Matt Gaetz's selection as attorney general. While Gaetz is a controversial choice due to his own DOJ investigation, Epshteyn's advocacy for him underscored his impact on Trump's decision-making. Additionally, Epshteyn has revived discussions around employing private investigators for staff background checks in lieu of the FBI, a move that could streamline security clearance processes once Trump reclaims office.

Though Epshteyn left the White House communications office in 2017, he continues to be a pivotal figure in Trump's operations. His aggressive legal strategies, particularly those aimed at delaying Trump’s trials, have proven both challenging and effective.

As Epshteyn’s influence solidifies, his blend of legal and advisory power underscores a lasting impact on Trump’s administration. With critical legislative and administrative roles being shaped by his input, the dynamics within the incoming government appear poised for notable shifts driven by Epshteyn’s counsel.
