In the battleground states of Arizona and Florida, the focus on abortion battles has failed to significantly impact the presidential contests, as President Biden trails in Arizona by 5 points and former President Trump maintains a comfortable lead of 9 points in Florida. While both states have significant support for abortion rights, other issues such as finances and immigration have taken precedence in shaping the electorate's decisions.

In Arizona, where a majority view the border situation as a crisis, many believe that President Biden has been "too easy" on migrants. There is a perception among voters that life in the state has worsened due to recent immigrants from Mexico and Latin America. This sentiment extends to many Hispanic voters, who are now evenly split between Biden and Trump, despite Biden winning the majority of their votes in 2020.

One of the key issues affecting Biden's support, particularly among Hispanic voters, is the perception that his policies prioritize recent immigrants over the interests of current U.S. citizens. Meanwhile, Trump's policies are seen as prioritizing the interests of citizens. This has led to a significant number of Hispanic voters expressing dissatisfaction with Biden's handling of both the economy and immigration.

Furthermore, the issue of inflation has also played a role in dampening support for Biden in Arizona. Despite inflation cooling in macro measures, Arizonans overwhelmingly feel the pinch of rising prices, which has contributed to Trump's lead in the state.

In Florida, the abortion issue has not been enough to shift the state into "battleground" territory for Biden, as Trump maintains a solid lead. Similar to Arizona, the economy and inflation take precedence in voters' minds. Additionally, while there is strong support for abortion access in principle or as an amendment, voting for Biden does not necessarily equate to supporting abortion rights. Many Republicans who support abortion's legality still vote for Trump, who himself has distanced himself from the issue.

The main factor influencing voters' decision on the abortion issue appears to be whether they are angry about the overturning of Roe v. Wade rather than simply dissatisfied. In Arizona, habitual voters who express anger about the overturning of Roe are more likely to say that the abortion issue motivates them to turn out and vote. However, Democrats, including Biden, continue to face challenges in motivating their regular base.

Beyond the presidential race, other Arizona Democrats fare better than Biden. Governor Katie Hobbs enjoys a slight majority approval, and Ruben Gallego holds a lead in a potential Senate match-up against Kari Lake. Gallego is particularly popular among Hispanic voters.

In the state of Florida, Republican incumbent Rick Scott has a comfortable lead in his potential match-up. Despite the abortion issue, Trump's popularity and the focus on the economy have overshadowed any potential gains for Biden in the state.

These findings are based on recent CBS News/YouGov surveys conducted between May 10-16, 2024. The surveys had representative samples of 1,510 adults in Arizona and 1,576 adults in Florida, with margins of error of +/- 3.3 and +/- 3.1 points respectively for the total sample of adults.
