Central Indiana residents have reason to celebrate as Penske Entertainment and Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) have announced that the local television blackout for this year’s Indianapolis 500 will be lifted. This decision comes amidst expectations of a sold-out crowd for the event.
Speaking about the decision, IndyCar and IMS president Doug Boles expressed enthusiasm about the move, stating, "We will lift the local delay in the Indianapolis market so those folks here in Indianapolis can watch the Indianapolis 500 live when it’s run." He acknowledged that the same evening will also feature a Pacers game, but emphasized that many fans have a tradition of watching the race when they return home.
According to Boles, this year’s crowd is expected to be enormous, creating a spectacular backdrop for what will be the first Indy 500 broadcast on Fox. "The sheer size and scale of this crowd is going to be massive and will offer an epic backdrop for the very first Indy 500 on Fox," he noted.
This year’s live broadcast opportunity is a rare treat for local fans, marking only the eighth time in history that the local blackout has been lifted. The last instance was in 2021, during a pandemic-altered race with limited attendance.
Fans can tune into Fox Sports to catch the 109th Running of the Indianapolis 500, scheduled for Sunday, May 25, 2025, at 12:45 p.m. ET.
