An independent probe has revealed the urgent need for a comprehensive overhaul at the City University of New York (CUNY) to address the rise of antisemitism within its campuses. The damning report, commissioned by Governor Kathy Hochul and conducted by retired state Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman, highlighted alarming incidents of antisemitism targeting members of the CUNY community. The 146-page analysis pointed fingers at some faculty members and campus presidents for either fueling or turning a blind eye to the hatred against Jewish individuals within the public university system.

Judge Lippman emphasized the pressing issue of safety within CUNY campuses, where a significant number of individuals do not feel secure due to the prevalence of antisemitic incidents. The report singled out certain professors for exacerbating tensions instead of promoting dialogue and understanding. Furthermore, it criticized college presidents for prioritizing their campus's reputation over effectively combating hatred, highlighting instances where uniformed officers were hesitantly deployed to handle violent protests to avoid negative publicity.

The comprehensive report put forth 13 recommendations aimed at tackling antisemitism and discrimination within CUNY. Suggestions included the creation of a specialized center to address these issues, hiring an antisemitism and hate monitor, implementing a victims' advocate program, and revising the university's flawed complaint system to ensure appropriate follow-up on reported incidents. Additionally, the report called for more robust training for diversity officers, clear policies on free speech and protest regulations, and alignment with international standards for defining antisemitism. Governor Hochul stressed that every New Yorker should have the freedom to live, learn, and worship without fear of harassment or violence. CUNY Chancellor Felix Matos Rodriguez pledged to implement many of the recommendations to create a more inclusive and safe environment on campus.
