Incidents involving threats and attacks on election workers and public officials have escalated from phone calls and messages to actual shootings and bombings in the current volatile political environment. Recent weeks have seen charges brought against several individuals for making violent threats against election personnel.

A disturbing case in Philadelphia involved a man who threatened to "skin" and kill a state party official over the recruitment of poll watchers. Similarly, an Alabama man was prosecuted for threatening to execute election officials in Arizona. Other alarming events include an Arizona man being charged in connection with shootings at a Democratic Party campaign office, and a Californian who was apprehended for bombing a courthouse.

Attorney General Merrick Garland emphasized the Justice Department's stern stance against such threats, particularly as Election Day nears. "Anyone who illegally threatens an election worker, official, or volunteer will face the consequences," Garland declared, stressing the importance of ensuring public servants can perform their duties without fear.

Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco echoed Garland's sentiment, identifying threats against election workers as direct threats to the democratic process itself. "Election officials must be free from improper influence, physical threats, and other forms of intimidation," Monaco stated.

FBI Director Christopher Wray also highlighted the critical role of election workers and the unacceptable nature of threats against them. "Election workers' security concerns are incomprehensible and unacceptable," he asserted, underscoring their dedication and patriotism.

In response to the increasing threats, a federal election threats task force, initiated by Garland three and a half years ago, announced actions against those responsible. This task force collaborates closely with local authorities to coordinate their investigative efforts, taking decisive steps to protect the integrity of the election process.

The Justice Department's prompt measures serve as a stern reminder that democracy depends on the unimpeded function of those who serve the public, ensuring that election officials can carry out their vital roles without fearing for their lives.
