Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has expressed confidence that the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Chicago will remain peaceful, despite the expected presence of thousands of protesters. Governor Pritzker has emphasized that significant changes have occurred since the tumultuous 1968 convention and that authorities are well-prepared to handle any potential disruptions.

During an interview on CNN's "State of the Union," Governor Pritzker downplayed concerns of escalating demonstrations during this week's convention. He highlighted the unity within the Democratic Party, stating that it is a "whole different ballgame" compared to 1968 when the party was deeply divided over the Vietnam War. Governor Pritzker also mentioned advancements in policing techniques and technology as factors that will contribute to maintaining order during the event.

The 1968 Democratic National Convention, held in Chicago, remains infamous due to intense feuds over delegate seating, disagreements regarding the party's platform, and anti-war protests that turned into riots. This unrest played a significant role in the Democrats losing the subsequent presidential election. Observers have drawn parallels between the 1968 convention and the upcoming one, citing similarities such as the city hosting both events, a presidential transition, and internal party divisions over foreign policy.

This year, the Democratic Party has faced internal debates concerning the Israel-Hamas war, leading to significant dissent over President Biden's support for Israel. Throughout the primary process, many voters marked themselves as "uncommitted" in protest of Biden's stance. As a result, numerous groups have planned demonstrations in Chicago during the convention, raising concerns of potential disturbances.

Governor Pritzker acknowledged the history of conventions in Chicago, including the 1996 Democratic convention, and assured both protesters and convention attendees that authorities are committed to maintaining safety and protecting the right to peaceful protest. He emphasized that troublemakers would be identified, arrested, and held accountable, but also recognized the majority of protesters as peaceful individuals seeking to have their voices heard.

Governor Pritzker's optimism extends beyond the convention itself. He now expresses confidence in the Democratic Party's prospects under Vice President Kamala Harris, proclaiming that Harris has energized the party in a way he hasn't seen since Barack Obama's 2008 campaign.

However, as Governor Pritzker heads into the convention, he is confronted with a $700,000 attack ad accusing him of failing to deliver progress for black residents in Illinois. The ad, sponsored by the National Black Empowerment Fund, criticizes Pritzker's record on job creation in the legal cannabis and green energy sectors for black residents, as well as funding disparities for black students in public schools. The ad claims that Illinois ranks last in the nation for racial equality.

Despite these challenges, Governor Pritzker remains focused on ensuring a successful and peaceful convention, with hopes that the unity within the Democratic Party and the energy generated by Vice President Kamala Harris will propel the party forward. As Chicago prepares to host another historic political event, authorities will be working diligently to balance the right to protest with the maintenance of law and order.
