Title: Illinois' $53.1 Billion State Budget Passes Legislature, Awaits Governor's Signature
In an overnight session, the proposed $53.1 billion Illinois budget cleared both chambers of the state legislature and is now en route to Governor JB Pritzker's office for final approval. The budget, passed by the Senate on Sunday and the House early Wednesday morning, is expected to be signed into law by the governor.
Governor Pritzker commended the General Assembly for their efforts in passing the budget bill, which includes several notable provisions. However, state Republicans have criticized the budget, labeling it a partisan burden on taxpayers. State Rep. Blaine Wilhour (R-Beecher City) expressed concerns about the financial strain on taxpayers and the potential need for additional funding in the future.
Despite some infighting among Democrats, the budget was successfully passed by the House, capping off the legislative process just after 2 a.m. on Wednesday. The budget features significant changes, including the elimination of the state's 1% grocery tax. Additionally, it introduces a new child tax credit, allocates a $350 million annual increase in funding for K-12 education, sets aside $14 million for the establishment of a Department of Early Childhood, and designates $182 million for migrant services. To finance these initiatives, the state plans to raise $750 million in taxes, primarily through adjustments to the corporate tax code.
One notable omission from the budget is the Bears' request for $2 billion dollars in public funding towards a new lakefront stadium. This contentious issue will not be addressed by state lawmakers until at least fall 2024.
While perspectives on the budget diverge between the majority Democrats and the state Republicans, State Rep. Jehan Gordon-Booth (D-Peoria) highlighted the resilience of the diverse legislative body in working towards progress. She emphasized the commitment to moving the great state of Illinois forward.
With the budget now in the hands of Governor Pritzker, the expectation is that he will sign the legislation into law, solidifying the allocation of funds for various critical sectors within the state. As Illinois looks ahead, the impact of this budget on taxpayers and the state's overall financial stability remains a topic of ongoing discussion.
