The trial of Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, on tax charges has been pushed back to September 5th, following a ruling by Judge Mark Scarsi who required Biden's attorney, Abbe Lowell, to promise that no further delays would be sought.
Lowell had requested a postponement of the trial, citing various issues including problems with discovery, securing witnesses and experts, as well as an upcoming federal gun crimes trial in Delaware set for June 3rd. However, his efforts to delay the gun trial have been unsuccessful.
Hunter Biden has been accused of being involved in a tax-avoidance conspiracy spanning several years, allegedly funding a luxurious lifestyle while also purchasing and possessing a firearm while using illegal drugs. Biden has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
During the hearing, prosecutor Leo Wise opposed the motion for delay, asserting that the case should be tried without any further delay. Lowell, in response, argued that zealously representing a client should not be considered a delaying tactic.
Wise contended that despite the noise surrounding the case, it is not complex and simply involves charges against an individual taxpayer. He emphasized that the volume of exhibits is not extensive.
In ruling to move the trial to September, Judge Scarsi acknowledged the defendant's needs but also weighed the potential prejudice caused by the delay. Judge Scarsi stated, "In this court, we like to set schedules and keep them."
Hunter Biden did not appear in court and waived his presence at the hearing.
The upcoming trial on tax charges against Hunter Biden is expected to garner significant attention, given his familial ties to President Joe Biden and the allegations against him. As the trial date has been set, both the prosecution and defense will now prepare their cases in anticipation of the September trial date.
