In a recent radio interview, House Speaker Mike Johnson called for Columbia University President Minouche Shafik to resign, criticizing her handling of the anti-Israel demonstrations on campus. Johnson labeled her as "very weak" and "inept," expressing his disappointment in her inability to guarantee the safety of Jewish students.
Johnson announced that he would be holding a press conference at Columbia University later in the day with fellow House Republicans from New York to call for President Shafik's resignation. This comes after a joint letter from New York House Republicans on Monday also called for her to step down.
Highlighting the issues faced by Jewish students on campus, Johnson stated that they have been subject to physical assault, harassment, intimidation, and threats. He emphasized the need for universities to maintain control and protect their students, stating that federal funding should be revoked from institutions failing to do so.
The House Speaker also expressed his frustration with the Biden administration's handling of the matter, accusing them of giving in to the "antisemitic wing" of the Democratic party. He criticized the administration for backpedaling on support for Israel and for some Democratic members of Congress refusing to denounce acts such as chanting "Death to America!" during protests.
Describing the situation on college campuses as "disgusting and unacceptable," Johnson stressed the importance of accountability and urged leaders across the country to speak out against such actions. He called for stronger leadership from the White House and criticized officials for allowing "mob rule" to undermine the principles of free speech, the exchange of ideas, and the exercise of religion.
In response to the criticism, Columbia University made efforts to ease tensions by removing a significant number of tents from an encampment on campus, as stated on their website.
The call for President Shafik's resignation adds pressure to Columbia University, as Johnson and his colleagues aim to address the issues surrounding the handling of anti-Israel demonstrations and ensure a safe and inclusive educational environment for all students.
