The House is preparing to vote on a new funding bill this week that would extend government funding until December 20, in a bid to prevent a potential government shutdown at the end of the month. House leaders have introduced a three-month clean continuing resolution, which is expected to be voted on by Wednesday according to GOP leadership aides.

The legislation includes provisions for additional funding and resources for the Secret Service in the aftermath of the second assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump. The aid is specifically allocated to support the agency's needs for the 2024 campaign, particularly in terms of candidate protection. Additionally, there are funds designated in the bill to replenish the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Speaker Mike Johnson shared details of the funding proposal in a letter to the GOP conference, emphasizing the importance of passing a clean continuing resolution to avoid complications with the Senate. Johnson acknowledged the potential risks of a government shutdown so close to a presidential election, describing it as "an act of malpractice." Nonetheless, he underscored the necessity of moving forward under the prevailing circumstances and expressed confidence in the collective efforts of House members.
