In a powerful address delivered at the Israeli Knesset, House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik voiced her unwavering support for Israel and called for decisive action against Hamas in response to the October 7 terrorist attacks. The New York Republican emphasized the need to wipe out those responsible for the attacks and urged a return to former President Donald Trump's policies.
Stefanik, who is considered a potential vice-presidential pick for the presumptive GOP nominee, became the highest-ranking House Republican to address the Israeli governing body since the October 7 attacks, according to the GOP conference. She declared herself a "leading proponent and partner" to Donald Trump and sharply criticized the Biden administration, particularly regarding its stance on Israel.
The congresswoman condemned the Biden administration's decision to block military aid to Israel, stating that there is "no excuse" for such a move. She advocated for continued support and cooperation between the United States and Israel and called attention to the dangers of antisemitism, both on college campuses and within Western institutions.
Stefanik also highlighted the need for ideological self-defense alongside physical self-defense. She criticized pro-Palestinian protesters on college campuses, accusing them of "cosplaying Hamas" and undermining the cause for peace.
The Biden administration's decision to pause the shipment of certain bombs to Israel, citing concerns over their use in densely populated areas, was met with disapproval from Stefanik. While the administration has begun the early stages of a process to proceed with a new $1 billion arms deal for Israel, Stefanik argued that the withholding of aid undermines Israel's ability to defend itself.
In response to questions about civilian deaths in Gaza, Stefanik pointed to Hamas' use of "civilian shields" and stressed Israel's commitment to human rights, stating that they conduct their operations with great respect for these principles. However, human rights groups have accused Israel of war crimes and abuses during the conflict.
Stefanik concluded her address by urging House Republicans to step up and provide the moral leadership that the world is seeking. She applauded the House-passed, GOP-led bill aimed at preventing President Biden from withholding approved weapons transfers to Israel, asserting that the American people stand strongly with Israel.
The congresswoman's remarks come at a crucial time as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict continues. Stefanik's unwavering support for Israel and calls for action against Hamas highlight the sharp divide in Congress over the appropriate response to the situation.
