In a retaliatory move against House Republicans' recent attempt to rename an airport after Donald Trump, a group of House Democrats has introduced a bill to rename a federal prison in Miami, Florida, as the "Donald J. Trump Federal Correctional Institution." The legislation, co-sponsored by Representatives Gerry Connolly of Virginia, Jared Moskowitz of Florida, and John Garamendi of California, was officially filed on Wednesday, April 3rd.

The proposal to rename the Miami Federal Correctional Institution comes shortly after House Republicans introduced a bill to rename Washington Dulles International Airport after the former president. With the 2022 election year in focus, Republicans aim to honor the presumptive nominee, while Democrats seek to undermine his legacy.

Representative Moskowitz jokingly stated, "Everyone knows President Trump loves to write his name in gold letters on all his buildings. But he's never had his name on a federal building before, and as a public servant, I just want to help the former president. Help us make that dream a reality."

Connolly, who initially suggested naming a prison after Trump because of the 91 felony charges he is facing, referenced his suggestion, stating, "Donald Trump is facing 91 felony charges. If Republicans want to name something after him, I'd suggest they find a federal prison." He further added, "It is only right that the closest federal prison to Mar-a-Lago should bear his name." The Miami Federal Correctional Institution, which houses over 1,000 inmates, is located approximately 90 miles south of Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate.

Despite the Democrats' bill and the Republicans' attempt to rename the airport, both proposals are unlikely to gain traction in their respective chambers. The GOP-controlled House is unlikely to support the renaming of the prison, while the Democratic-controlled Senate is expected to reject renaming Washington Dulles International Airport.

The Bureau of Prisons, responsible for overseeing the Miami federal prison, released a statement emphasizing the importance of clearly identifying facilities based on their locations for the public, incarcerated individuals, and their families.

ABC News reached out to the Trump campaign for comment, but no response has been received at the time of writing.

It remains to be seen whether these renaming efforts will gain any momentum or if they will ultimately be viewed as symbolic gestures caught up in the partisan divide leading up to the 2022 elections.
