Horry County Patrol Vehicle Involved in Fatal Accident, Officer Placed on Administrative Leave

An Horry County Police Department officer has been placed on administrative leave after a tragic incident on a beach in Myrtle Beach on Thursday afternoon. The incident resulted in the death of a beachgoer who was struck by a patrol vehicle, according to a statement by Mikayla Moskov, the Director of Public Information.

The victim, identified as 66-year-old Sandra "Sandy" Schultz-Peters from Myrtle Beach, tragically lost her life due to injuries sustained in the incident. Horry County Coroner Michelle McSpadden confirmed the fatality.

The accident occurred around 1 p.m. near the Nash Street beach access close to Springmaid Pier. According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP), the patrol vehicle was heading north from Nash Street when it struck the woman. Emergency services rushed her to the hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries.

While the SCHP will be leading the investigation, the Horry County Police Department (HCPD) has also launched an internal investigation into the matter. In a statement, HCPD leadership expressed their condolences to the community and the family affected by this tragic loss. They emphasized their commitment to ensuring that both the external and internal investigations are conducted promptly and without interference.
