Authorities in Paris have initiated a hate speech investigation following the filing of a complaint by Thomas Jolly, the artistic director of the Paris Olympics 2024 opening ceremony. Jolly alleges that he has received death threats and endured public insults, prompting the involvement of the Central Office for Combating Crimes Against Humanity and Hate Crimes.

Jolly lodged his complaint with the Paris prosecutor's office on Tuesday, four days after the opening ceremony took place. The complaint detailed defamatory remarks and offensive insults directed towards him. The prosecutor's office stated that Jolly has been the target of threatening messages and insults on social media platforms, with critics specifically targeting his sexual orientation and incorrectly assuming his Israeli roots.

The backlash received online prompted the organizers of the 2024 Paris Games to issue an apology earlier this week. Anne Descamps, spokesperson for Paris 2024, expressed remorse for any offense caused, emphasizing that there was never an intention to disrespect any religious group. Descamps highlighted that the opening ceremony aimed to celebrate community tolerance and believed that this objective had been achieved.

In addition to Thomas Jolly, Barbara Butch, a French disc jockey who performed during the drag queen scene of the ceremony, has also filed a complaint. Butch reported receiving death threats and facing abuse on social media platforms. The Paris prosecutor's office, in response to the complaints, has tasked the Central Office for Combating Crimes Against Humanity and Hate Crimes with leading the investigation.

Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, voiced her support for Thomas Jolly and condemned the threats and harassment he has faced in recent days. Hidalgo expressed gratitude for Jolly's contribution to the opening ceremony, stating that he had showcased the values of Paris with pride and honor. The Mayor affirmed that the city will always stand by artists, creation, and freedom.

As the investigation into the hate speech directed at Thomas Jolly and Barbara Butch continues, efforts are being made to address the issue and ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals involved in the Paris Olympics 2024. Authorities are determined to bring those responsible for the threats and insults to justice, emphasizing the importance of tolerance, respect, and inclusivity during the Games and beyond.
