Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced movie mogul, has entered a plea of not guilty to a first-degree criminal sexual act during his arraignment in New York. This comes after Weinstein was recently rushed to the hospital for emergency heart surgery. The nature of the new charges against him was not immediately clear. Weinstein's representative, Juda Engelmayer, stated that they were unaware of the details of the charges as they had not been served with the indictment.

Weinstein, 72, appeared in court more than a week after undergoing emergency heart surgery at Bellevue Hospital. His representatives had previously revealed that he was being treated for several medical conditions, including COVID-19, double pneumonia, diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis, and fluid on his heart and lungs.

The former producer, known for his role at Miramax, was found guilty in February 2020 of criminal sexual act in the first degree and rape in the third degree. This landmark moment for the #MeToo movement resulted in Weinstein being sentenced to 23 years in prison. The specific allegations leading to his conviction were made by Miriam "Mimi" Haleyi and Jessica Mann. Haleyi accused Weinstein of forcibly performing oral sex on her in 2006, while Mann alleged that Weinstein raped her in a hotel room in 2013.

However, in April, Weinstein's conviction was overturned by a New York appeals court, citing the inclusion of "irrelevant" testimony during the trial regarding allegations that were not part of the case. The court's decision emphasized that an accused individual should only be held accountable for the crimes they are charged with and not be subjected to unrelated allegations.

It is important to note that the overturning of Weinstein's conviction in New York did not affect his separate conviction in a Los Angeles trial in 2022, where he was sentenced to 16 years in prison for rape. As of now, Weinstein is awaiting retrial in New York, tentatively scheduled for November, while consistently maintaining his innocence and denying any allegations of nonconsensual sex.

USA TODAY has reached out to Weinstein's representative for comment, but no response has been received at the time of writing. The developments surrounding this high-profile case continue to captivate the public's attention as the legal process moves forward.
