A widening rift is developing between Elon Musk and the Trump administration, sources indicate, as Musk harbors grievances over several of the administration's recent actions. People familiar with the matter revealed that Musk has expressed increasing frustration about multiple issues, including the proposed spending cuts to the electric vehicle (EV) tax credit.
Despite initially calling for the end of the EV tax credit after the November election, Musk and his company, Tesla, have now become vocal opponents of this measure. "Abruptly ending the energy tax credits would threaten America's energy independence and the reliability of our grid," Tesla stated on social media, highlighting their concerns about the potential impact on the nation's energy strategy.
Musk's frustrations extend beyond the EV tax credit. He has also voiced objections to the Trump administration striking artificial intelligence deals with OpenAI, a competitor to Musk's own AI start-up. Sources revealed that Musk had raised his concerns privately about a deal that excluded his company, but the agreement proceeded regardless.
Further adding to Musk's discontent was the recent withdrawal of Jared Isaacman's nomination as NASA administrator, a move that reportedly left Musk deeply disappointed. The deterioration in relations has also been exacerbated by significant disagreements over trade policy. In April, Musk took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to sharply criticize trade advisor Peter Navarro, calling him a "moron" and "dumber than a sack of bricks."
The tensions reached new heights on Tuesday when Musk slammed a funding bill aimed at advancing President Trump’s legislative agenda. Describing the bill as a "disgusting abomination," Musk used a series of posts on X to attack the proposed spending, contending that "Mammoth spending bills are bankrupting America! ENOUGH." Musk's tirade continued into Wednesday morning, revealing the depth of his dissatisfaction.
The White House has declined to comment on the matter, and a representative for Musk did not respond to requests for a statement. Some of the aforementioned details were initially reported by Axios.
