In an exciting announcement on Monday, the Green Bay Packers revealed that Ed Policy, currently serving as the team's chief operating officer and general counsel, has been named the franchise's next chairman of the board, president, and CEO. This appointment will take effect when the current president, Mark Murphy, officially retires in 2025.
The decision was unanimously approved by the Packers' board of directors, an entity responsible for governing the team president and CEO. Policy, who has been with the Packers for the past 12 seasons, expressed his enthusiasm for his new role, stating, "This is the absolute best job in sports. We are the stewards of the most iconic and unique organization in all of professional sports."
As the Packers' general counsel, Policy has been instrumental in representing the team in legal matters at the league level. Given that the Packers do not have an owner within the organization, as they are the only publicly-owned team in the four major North American sports leagues, his new position carries paramount importance.
Policy will spend the next year transitioning into the role of president and CEO, as Murphy is set to retire after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70 next summer. Murphy commended Policy's promotion, stating, "Congratulations to Ed on this well-deserved promotion to what I believe is the most unique and meaningful position in the world of professional sports. His work on Titletown has been particularly impactful. He is highly respected - both in the building and within the NFL. I've enjoyed working with him and am confident he will be an excellent steward for the organization."
Prior to joining the Packers, Policy served in various roles, including a stint as the AFL's commissioner in the Arena Football League and as an executive consultant to the NFL. Furthermore, his connection to football runs deep as the son of former San Francisco 49ers executive Carmen Policy, who played a significant role in leading the team to multiple championships during their dynasty years in the 1980s and '90s.
As Policy takes on his new position, the Packers organization looks to a future guided by his expertise, experience, and dedication. With his strong track record, the team is optimistic about the continued success both on and off the field under his leadership.
