In a recent report from The Athletic's NFL insider, Dianna Russini, it has been revealed that the Green Bay Packers and quarterback Jordan Love are actively working on securing a contract extension. However, as of now, the deal has not been finalized.

Love has been notably absent from the first three practices of the team's training camp, embarking on a hold-in that has now entered its fourth day. It seems that Love is adamant about not donning the team's yellow helmet until an extension is officially in place, which is understandable considering the immense financial stakes involved.

As national media outlets continue to zero in on what is expected to become the most expensive contract in the history of the sport, ESPN's Adam Schefter predicts that Love's yearly average will surpass that of quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and Joe Burrow, standing at an impressive $55 million. However, he also anticipates that Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott will eventually surpass Love's contract with an even higher figure.

While it's clear that a big payday lies ahead for Love, the focus between the Packers and Love's camp is not solely centered on the numbers. Green Bay's approach to guarantees and rolling guarantees will play a significant role in the negotiations. Historically, the Packers have been cautious about promising guaranteed money beyond the first year of a contract, which is in stark contrast to Burrow's extension with the Bengals, where he received $146.5 million in guarantees.

To bridge this gap, it is likely that the Packers will opt for rolling guarantees, a strategy they have employed in previous contracts, including that of former starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers. This means that Love will have to earn the security of his next season's salary or roster bonus through exceptional performance in the prior season, as demonstrated by the Kansas City Chiefs' contract with Patrick Mahomes.

Additional insights from Packers' General Manager Brian Gutekunst, shared with Yahoo Sports, highlight the team's confidence in Love's abilities and emphasize the significance of his presence during the crucial training camp period. Gutekunst emphasized that the success Love enjoyed last season was not a fluke and that there is still ample room for growth.

Despite the optimism surrounding potential contractual agreement, the fact remains that a deal was expected to be completed before the start of training camp. Schefter alleviates concerns by stating that fans should only worry if Love remains unsigned by Labor Day. However, with the team's Family Night practice just around the corner, and the preseason set to commence shortly after, pressure mounts to reach an agreement sooner rather than later.

The Packers and Love's camp are undoubtedly working diligently to find common ground, balancing financial considerations with the desire to have Love back on the field. Ultimately, fans and the entire organization hope for a swift resolution that ensures Love's continued development and solidifies his future in Green Bay.
